An entire range of "modern" manufacturing techniques and system skills is covered by CMI.
They include skills used at all levels and in all locations in a manufacturing environment from the utility worker to the manufacturing team leaders, from the materials preparation to the finishing and despatch.
These skills include:
- Just in Time
- Quick changeover
- Using statistics
- Analysing and using value chains
- Root cause analysis
- Applying manufacturing practices using SCADA and MRP
- Sustainability
- Team membership / leadership
- Change management
There are three levels of recognition for the above skills, namely:
- Participating in / using the skills
- Leading others / managing the process
- Developing or modifying the process/ systems
The New Zealand Qualifications Framework currently features 39 registered unit standards in the Competitive Manufacturing domain. This is just over half of the units of competency registered on the corresponding Australian system.
These units differ from the standard New Zealand format. They feature a front page only and then link directly to the Australian version.
A list of all units registered on the Australian qualifications framework (and with corresponding New Zealand identification) can be downloaded:

Two qualifications are registered on the NZQA Framework
- Competitive Manufacturing with Strands in Introductory Application and Technical Application - (Level 2/3 - 40-50 credits)
This qualification is for employees who are new to competitive manufacturing. The purpose of the qualification is to recognise the knowledge and skills on two different levels.
The introductory application allows operators to become actively involved in the development and implementation of processes and systems to improve production capacity and product quality.
The technical applicationallows those moving directly to technical support and leadership roles to develop skills to support the implementation of competitive manufacturing.
- Competitive Manufacturing with an Optional Strand in Facilitation - (Level 4 - 70-90 credits)
The qualification is for leaders in competitive manufacturing who require a level of competence to interact between members of their team and management by leading change, implementing a competitive manufacturing system and ensuring process improvements are sustained.
The qualification is designed to afford the maximum scope for career development within a range of processing industry disciplines within the manufacturing industry.
The facilitation strand allows those wishing to move into facilitation of competitive manufacturing teams, to gain the skills and knowledge required. Learners who meet the requirements of the core as well as the strand requirements - a minimum total of 90 credits - will gain the qualification.
The full NZQA versions of the qualifications are available through the same links as unit standards.

Please provide feedback and your own contributions on:
- Registration of Additional Unit Standards (September 07):
A further 31 Australian unit standards are due to be prepared for registration on the NZQA framework. This project is estimated for completion by end of May 2008.
- Development of a Diploma in Competitive Manufacturing (May 07)
Preparations are well advanced to develop a level 6 diploma in CM aligned to the Australian training packages at diploma level. Completion of this project depends on the registration of the Australian unit standards on the New Zealand framework - approximately in mid 2008.
- Revision of the Level 4 qualifications in Competitive Manufacturing (July 07)
A recent vision of the Australian training package has resulted in a mismatch with the current New Zealand qualification. The changes in the training package benefit the overall programme and the Board agreed to align the New Zealand qualifications through the review process. Tentative completion date for the project is mid 2008.
